Solana Beach Neighborhood Guide

Solana Beach is a small coastal city of just over 13,000 people, located about 20 miles north of San Diego. It was first settled in the mid-1880s, but didn’t really find its feet until 1918, when the Lake Hodges Dam was built. The creation of the man-made Fletcher Cove in 1925 gave people access to the beaches from the bluffs upon which the town is built, and provided a major new attraction for the area. It was finally incorporated as the town of Solana Beach in 1986.

Nowadays Solana Beach is known for its eclectic art and live music scene, as well as great beaches. Seaside on the north end is a good spot for surfing, with big waves breaking over Tabletop Reef. You can investigate the tide pools at Tide Beach, or take the children to play in the grassy area around Fletcher Cove. Take advantage of the small free parking lot if you arrive early enough. If hiking is your thing, San Dieguito County Park is to the east and San Elijo Lagoon is to the north of the town.

Interstate-5 runs right through the middle of town. Del Mar is to the south, Cardiff-by-the-Sea is to the north, and Rancho Santa Fe is to the east.
