San Marcos Neighborhood Guide

San Marcos is a diverse, thriving city of about 93,000 people. It’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, with a population increase of 69% since 2000. A number of master-planned communities, such as Santa Fe Hills in the northwest and Discovery Hills in the southwest, have been built to attract new residents. San Marcos is located just west of Escondido, and freeway access is through State Route 78, which runs through the center of town, and Interstate-15, which is a couple of miles to the east.

This community is 20 miles inland, giving warm summers and cool winters, although the weather is still quite pleasant overall. There are plenty of parks in the area to enjoy outdoor activities, and the Palomar College Planetarium can provide an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.

The main commercial street is Ronald Packard Pkwy (SR 78), with a Walmart, Kohl’s, and Costco, as well as a Home Depot and Hobby Lobby. West San Marcos Blvd. also offers some restaurants and shopping centers.
