Escondido Neighborhood Guide

Escondido is a vibrant, multicultural city about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego. It was established in 1888, making it one of the oldest cities in the region. The name comes from the Spanish word for ‘hidden’, possibly referring to its location in a valley tucked away among the hills.

This community is situated about 30 miles from the ocean, so its climate is more extreme than coastal cities such Encinitas and Carlsbad. Escondido has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers (average highs approaching 90°F in July and August) and cool winters (lows near 40°F in December and January).

Like the rest of Southern California, Escondido offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. You can camp, hike, and fish around Dixon Lake, Lake Hodges, or Lake Wohlford. Downtown Escondido has a number of art galleries and museums if you want to add some culture to your day.

Real estate in Escondido is generally quite affordable compared to other areas of San Diego county. There are some upscale suburban areas on the outskirts of the city, while the center of town tends to be more working-class.
