Old Encinitas Neighborhood Guide

Old Encinitas is the heart of historic Encinitas, and still keeps some of that small-town vibe. It started out as a railroad town in 1881, but most of the area’s historic landmarks were built during the 1920s. The famous Moonlight Beach might have gotten its name during this time, when bootleggers sailed in at night to drop off their illicit cargo. Nowadays it’s a favored surfer hangout, along with Swami’s break. If you’re interested in California history, you might like to take a walking tour of the neighborhood. The Encinitas Historical Society has some great information to start.

This community has plenty of modern attractions as well, housing some of the most beautiful gardens in this part of California. It also has many eclectic locally-owned businesses and restaurants. The Coast Highway 101 is the main commercial drag, and downtown Encinitas holds the Encinitas Station Farmers Market every Wednesday – a fantastic place to buy fresh produce, flowers, and handicrafts.

The borders of Old Encinitas are defined by Union Street to the north, which separates it from Leucadia, and Santa Fe Drive to the south, which sets if off from Cardiff-by-the-Sea. New Encinitas is over the coastal ridge to the east, and to the west is the Pacific Ocean. Interstate-5 runs through this community on the eastern side, giving you easy access to San Diego.
