El Cajon Neighborhood Guide

El Cajon, nicknamed ‘The Big Box’, is located in a valley and ‘boxed in’ by surrounding mountains. In general, this is a more working-class community compared to San Diego city. Outlying areas, such as Granite Hills, Shadow Mountain, Chase, and Fletcher Hills, feature more upscale suburbs. The weather in El Cajon isn’t as mild as more coastal areas, with hotter summers and cooler winters. Average highs in the summer are still in the 80s, but the mercury can climb well over the 100° mark at times. Winter lows are in the 40s.

There are a variety of things to do in downtown El Cajon. The Fine Arts district, at Main Street and South Magnolia Avenue, offers a number of art galleries, the Olaf Wieghorst Museum, and  boutique shopping. There are also a number of shopping centers around the intersection of North 2nd Street and Interstate-8.

Interstate-8 runs through the center of the city, with State Routes 67 and 125 providing additional freeway access.
