Alpine Neighborhood Guide

Alpine is a small community of about 14,200 people in the Cuyamaca Mountains some 25 miles east of San Diego. The area is about 1,200 feet above sea level and enjoys a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with summer highs in the 90s and winter lows that sometimes dip below freezing. It does snow a couple of times a year, but doesn’t tend to accumulate so you won’t need to buy a snow shovel.

In recent years the construction of new housing in Alpine has made it a popular exurb of San Diego. Interstate 8 runs through the center of the area, offering an easy commute. The beautiful views, comparatively affordable real estate, and small-town vibe make it an attractive choice for many people.

The main shopping areas are at Alpine Boulevard and Tavern Road near Interstate-8, which has an Ace Hardware, pharmacies, and restaurants. There’s also an Albertson’s and other stores at Alpine Boulevard and S. Grade Road a little further east along Interstate-8.
