University Heights Neighborhood Guide

University Heights is a central neighborhood just minutes from downtown San Diego. It’s quite affordable, with an abundance of small, bare-bones rental apartments, mostly dating from the 1970s through the ‘90s. If you’re looking for something more upscale, luxurious detached homes are also available. Shirley Ann Place, the block between Madison Avenue and Monroe Avenue, has been designated a historic district due to its Spanish Colonial Revival bungalows built during the 1920s.

This community is right next door to Hillcrest and also gay-friendly, even though it’s a bit quieter. Crime here is 28% lower than the San Diego average, so it’s quite safe. The residents like to hang out in Trolley Barn Park, which hosts live music every Friday evening in the summer. Park Boulevard and Adams Avenue are the main commercial streets, offering a choice of good ethnic restaurants and boutique shopping, not to mention carrying on San Diego’s interest in craft beer.

Freeway access is through State Road 163 on the west side, Interstate-805 on the east, and Interstate-8 to the north.
