Tierrasanta Neighborhood Guide

Tierrasanta is a community in the northeastern side of San Diego. The name comes from the Spanish term meaning ‘holy ground’, referencing its beginnings as part of the Mission San Diego de Alcala ranch. Nowadays it’s called ‘The Island in the Hills’, since it’s somewhat isolated from the rest of the city.

On the east border you can look out over the large expanse of Mission Trails Regional Park. The Mount Soledad Freeway (SR 52) runs along the north side, with the Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar beyond it. On the west side is I-15, while on the south is the San Diego River and Mission Valley. Given its proximity to the freeways, it’s no surprise to learn that Tierrasanta is only a 20-minute drive away from San Diego proper.

Life in Tierrasanta offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation – the park abounds in hiking and biking trails, and the neighborhood itself is somewhat sparsely developed, so there are still green areas throughout. The Tierrasanta Community Park and Recreation Center has a sports field, gym, swimming pool, and also offers community classes.
