South Park Neighborhood Guide

South Park is a centrally located neighborhood, just east of Balboa Park. The residences are generally made up of small to medium-sized (2 to 4 bedroom) detached single-family homes, along with some small apartment buildings and bungalow courts. This community boasts a number of historically-designated Craftsman and Spanish-Colonial-style houses, many of them designed by famous San Diego architects such as Richard Requa and Irving Gill.

This neighborhood has a generally relaxed, eclectic vibe, and is also very LBGT-friendly, with 4.2% of the households being composed of same-sex couples. South Park isn’t the place to go if you’re looking for a sizzling night life, but is known for its craft breweries and organic/sustainable restaurants. There is also a dog park at Grape Street for your furry friends to let loose and play.

The commercial section of town is at 30th and University Avenue, where you can find a selection of art galleries, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and live entertainment. It’s highly walkable, and the town takes advantage of that by hosting quarterly ‘walkabouts’, where the stores stay open late and provide refreshments, while musicians serenade the crowds in the gathering twilight.

The main freeway access is through SR 15 on the east side of town.
