Point Loma Neighborhood Guide

The neighborhood of Point Loma is built on a hilly peninsula that helps separate San Diego Bay from the Pacific Ocean. This piece of land has a rich history, being the landing place of the first Europeans to come to California back in 1542, when it was discovered by a Portuguese navigator. Point Loma boasts a rich Portuguese heritage to this day.

Point Loma has several historic landmarks, but also much to offer in the way of fun leisure activities. You can fish and enjoy the beautiful views, enlivened by the occasional sight of the majestic gray whales that frequent this area of the Pacific. The beaches around here aren’t the sandy sunbathing type, but offer plenty of tide pools to explore.

This community tends to be quiet and peaceful. Real estate is a little pricey, but you can really feel safe living here – the crime rate is 60% lower than the San Diego average. About the only drawback is that it can get noisy sometimes due to being directly under the flight path from the San Diego airport. Locals say you soon get used to it, however.

Access to the rest of the city is through Interstate-8, which feeds into the north side of the point.
