Old Town Neighborhood Guide

Old Town has the oldest settlement by Europeans in San Diego. It was founded in 1769 by Spanish missionaries, who built a fort and a mission in the area. You couldn’t really call it a town until the 1820s, though, and it took a lot of ups and downs to get to the city we all know and love today.

You can still see the old site at the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, which is an eclectic shopping paradise nowadays, with many booths featuring Mexican handicrafts and clothing. If you’re feeling peckish after a day of shopping and seeing the sights, you can get authentic Mexican food at several price points. Old Town also hosts the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations every year.

Housing in this community is more affordable than some sections of San Diego. It’s highly accessible by freeway, with I-8 to the north and I-5 defining the west border. To the east is Mission Hills and on the south is Bankers Hill. Old Town also has a variety of public transport options to choose from, being a node for the bus and trolley systems, as well as the commuter railway and Amtrak’s intercity route.
