Ocean Beach Neighborhood Guide

Ocean Beach is on the west side of the city, where the San Diego river feeds into the ocean. It’s just south of Mission Beach, but this community is quieter and less commercialized. Its residents have fought to keep the businesses here local, fending off the establishment of chain stores and restaurants whenever possible. Today most of the shops along Newport Avenue are still owned and operated by Ocean Beach residents, or ‘OBceans’, as they like to be called.

This neighborhood is known for its beaches, its pier, and its parrots. You have a choice of beaches here – designated for surfing, swimming, sunbathing − there’s even one for your dog! Your canine companion can run free at Dog Beach and play in the surf with his doggie buddies to his heart’s content. You can also indulge in other types of ocean-based recreation: the Ocean Beach pier is one of the longest concrete piers in the US, and one of the few places in the city you can go fishing without a license.

Some of the most colorful residents of Ocean Beach and Point Loma are its feral parrots. Known as the ‘O.B. air force’, flocks of these green and red birds like to greet the dawn with their raucous cries.

Ocean Beach is accessible through I-8, which connects to Sunset Cliffs Blvd. on the northeastern side of the neighborhood.
