Coronado Neighborhood Guide

Coronado is an upscale resort city with one of the best beaches in the Continental United States. It’s name means “The Crowned One” is Spanish, and it’s also known as “The Crown City”.

Located on a tied island across the bay from San Diego, this neighborhood abounds with things to do and places to see. The legendary Hotel del Coronado was built here in 1888. With its fantastical turrets, this National Historic Landmark is thought by many to be the inspiration for the Emerald City in Frank Baum’s land of Oz. You can also play golf in the top-rated Coronado Public Golf Course.

The US Navy maintains bases and training facilities on the north and south sides of town. It’s the largest employer in Coronado, with “The Del” coming a distant second.

There are four ways in and out of Coronado: you can drive over the San Diego – Coronado Bridge or the 7-mile Silver Strand Peninsula; you can also take a ferry or water taxi. As you might expect, real estate here is a bit on the pricey side. Median rent and median income are higher here than in other parts of San Diego, but if you want to live in a safe, beautiful neighborhood, it just might be worth it.
