Clairemont Neighborhood Guide

Clairemont is a neighborhood in the north-central area of San Diego that was established in the 1950s to house the growing post-war population. Instead of the then-popular grid format, Clairemont’s architects designed streets that wind through canyons and mesas, taking advantage of the views.

The majority of properties in Clairemont are detached houses, many of them decades old. There are also a good number of townhouses and some reasonably-priced apartments. It’s a diverse and family-oriented neighborhood, not known for its red-hot night life. The major commercial centers can be found at the intersections of Clairemont Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, in addition to Balboa Avenue and Genesee Avenue.

You can easily drive to anywhere in the city from Clairemont, since it’s surrounded by freeways. On the east is Interstate 805 and on the west is Interstate 5. State Route 52 runs along the north side, with the neighborhood of Linda Vista bordering the west side.

Clairemont proper, also known as Clairemont Mesa, is made up of North Clairemont, Clairemont Mesa East, and Clairemont Mesa West. Bay Park and Bay Ho, to the west, are sometimes included in Clairemont as well.
