Bankers Hill Neighborhood Guide

Bankers Hill was established back in the 1890s as an enclave for the wealthy, which is how it got its name. A number of well-known architects, such as Irving Gill and Frank Mead, built showplaces for their upscale clientele during this time. If you want to take a look these architectural gems you can sign up for a walking tour of the neighborhood, or stay the night in one that has been converted into a bed and breakfast establishment.

Nowadays this section of San Diego, also known as Park West, is a mix of historic homes, detached residences, and brand-new condos. Even if you’re not interested in architecture, you won’t be bored in Bankers Hill. There’s plenty to keep you entertained and a variety of places to eat and drink. Balboa Park, on the east side of Bankers Hill, houses the San Diego City zoo, free museums, and a network of jogging and bike paths for your exercise enjoyment.

A new medical center has been built on 5th Avenue, which fronts the main business district – known as “Pill Hill” because of all the dental and medical offices.

Bankers Hill has Hillcrest to the north, Downtown to the south, and Little Italy and Midtown to the west.
