Barrio Neighborhood Guide

The Barrio is Carlsbad’s oldest neighborhood, founded in the early 1900s by Mexican immigrants escaping from the revolution in their home country. Housing in the area is made up mostly of small single-family homes, with a few apartment buildings. The Barrio is a quiet, close-knit community that has retained its Mexican-American character.

Over the last couple of years residents have discussed plans for gentrification − to widen the streets, put in new streetlights, and construct a shortcut over the railroad tracks to the beach. The intent is to make the community more attractive to new businesses and homeowners. The utility lines have already been buried, and several improvements added to the streets and drainage of the area. Real estate here is still quite pricey, in keeping with the rest of Carlsbad, and will only increase in value as the improvements go forward.

Boundaries are defined by Interstate 5 to the east and the railroad tracks to the west. Tamarack Avenue runs along the south side and Oak Avenue along the north.
